Acapulco, Mexico: The best beach destination everrr...

It felt like I had just gone to bed, when my alarm started ringing. Whatt...It was 4.30 am already? Apparently, it was.

To get myself out of my usual grumpy mood,(which is always the case if my sleep has been interrupted), I immediately started thinking of the reason why I was waking up this early- ACAPULCO.

Since the time I had been researching about Mexico for my upcoming trip, I was excited about this particular destination. With only one week in Mexico, I had decided that it would be split as 5 days in Mexico City and 2 days in Acapulco. After all, none of my vacations have been complete without going to the beach.

So there I was. Waking up super early to catch an early morning flight to my dream destination. With only two days in Acapulco, I wanted to reach super early and catch the last flight back, the next day. Hence, our flight from Mexico City to Acapulco was at 7 am and it was just a 45 min journey to our destination. Short and Sweet.

Soon at around 8 am, we (I was accompanied by my friend) landed at Acapulco and since were adequately warned about safety, we decided to take a registered pre paid cab to our hotel, which as per my research was in the center of the town, right next to all the 'happening places'. This is one thing I ensure when making my reservations of stay. I always book a hotel which is close to the main square of the town, thus avoiding all the expenditure on travel every day to the hub.

Twenty minutes later, the cab dropped us at our hotel- Fiesta Americana Villas. Grand, perfectly located, beautifully decorated and with the perfect vibe. I could not have asked for a better hotel.(Pat on my back for my amazing skills on booking the perfect place to stay via the internet.)

After getting checked into our rooms, which by the way was sea facing(whoopie), we decided to go relax by the beach for a while. The fact that the hotel had its own private beach was perfect and we decided to make the best of it. Cherry on top of the cake was that it was happy hours :). So we sat on our beach beds, soaked the sun, listened to music, took dips in the water and sipped our cocktails. Total BLISS. Now this is what I call a perfect vacation.

After we had our share of getting tanned, we decided to eat something before we head out to explore the town. The hotel had three different restaurants and we opted to try the one that was facing the swimming pool called the Maima Restaurant. We decided to keep it light as we were quite full with our 'liquid diet' ;). So sandwiches and house ceaser salad it was.

We then headed back to our room for a quick shower after which we planned to move out. But the beds seemed to be so tempting and were literally crying out for us, and so we decided to take a quick nap before we left. The 'quick nap' turned out to be a 1 and a half  hour long. But oh my god. It was sooo good to sleep(like it always is for me).

The good part about getting some sleep was that:
a) By now it was almost evening and the strong sun had softened up.
b) We were fresh and with more energy to carry on for the rest of the day.

So, at around 5 pm we left the hotel and started walking around. The place was still a little empty and the tourists had just started venturing out after their afternoon siestas. The walking path is adjacent to the shoreline and thus you can enjoy looking at the waves while admiring the artifacts in the shops on the way.

We were in one such shop, when we got talking to another tourist from Canada who mentioned that we must go and see the Cliff divers as this was one of the main attractions of Acapulco city.

Cliff Divers..Hmm..Sounds interesting. Why not. We had time in our hands and we could easily make it since there were daily shows held at 12:45 pm, 7:30 pm, 8:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 10:30 pm.
This show was held next to a restaurant called La Quebrada and you could watch the show by reserving a table at the restaurant or buy general tickets and watch from an open area. We decided to choose the latter since we were not in the mood to eat anything else(which we would have to in case we had booked a table). The ticket to the open area was USD 3.50 per person and once you reach the area, you had to find an empty spot with hopefully a good view and stay put till the show starts.

As the name suggests, this show basically involved few daring men, climb right up a tall cliff and then jump/dive into the water below. I was quite excited when I spotted 5 of the young cliff divers(between ages 15-30) walk down the stairs to the open area where we were standing, then climb down into water, swim across to the other side, climb a 15-20 feet high cliff and take their positions for the dive.

People in the crowd starting cheering the first diver and after doing his stretches(to avoid cramps in water) he took a dive. Splashhhhh. That was awesome. Then one by one all the others did different kinds of dive and the last two actually jumped together- one with a front dive and the other did a back flip. This is one hell of a scary profession. They could get hurt really bad if anything went wrong. But thankfully, it did not.

After the show, we took a cab back into the main town and then decided to walk on the beach with our feet getting slashed by the water. This was a wonderful sight as the sun had just set and the sky was full of beautiful orange colors. Half an hour later, we started feeling hungry and spotted this shack which was playing great music.

In the mood for some local sea food, we decided to give this shack a try. What a great decision it was. Not only was my Pina Colada, the best I have had till date; but the food was mind blowing. We had grilled fish and garlic butter prawns. Finger licking good. In fact, having food at the shacks on the beach not only is a sight for the eyes but is a treat for the stomach as well.

After the heavy meal, we walked back to our hotel which was almost 25 minutes away. We contemplated going to the clubs on the beach right next to our hotel, but because of the many horror stories of it being unsafe we decided to skip it. After all it had been a perfect day, and we did not want a bad experience to spoil it for us.Once back, we were pretty tired but before calling it a day, decided to go chill by the pool for some time.

We were so in love with our hotel, that the next day, (actually half a day since we had a flight at 5 pm), we decided to stay in the hotel and spend it in the pool and on the beach beds. It was anyways too hot to walk around the city and all we ventured out was for some brunch at the nearby restaurant. This restaurant was called 100% natural and had great many healthy yet delicious items to choose from. My favorite was the strawberry yogurt smoothie.

All in all, this visit to Acapulco was the highlight of my Mexico trip and I can't wait to come back here and have some more of the sun and the sand.

Thank you Acapulco for the amazing time.
